The World of Chemistry: ESSENTIALS

The World of Chemistry: ESSENTIALS
by Melvin Joesten, Mary E. Castellion, John L. Hogg
The World of Chemistry: Essentials,is designed for a one-semester chemistry course for non-science majors. The fundamental approach of the text is to teach the basic chemical principles within a framework of real world applications. Its goal is to teach students the chemical concepts they need in order to make appropriate consumer decisions, to read about and understand chemically-related issues in the media, to make informed decisions as voters, and to appreciate the significance of chemistry’s impact on their daily lives.
Chapter opening question highlight the most important aspects of the chapter topics and stimulate student interest. Key terms are boldfaced upon their first use and marginal definitions are provided for each. Worked Examples demonstrate how to utilize the concepts in this course in problem solving. Each example is accompanied by one or more exercises (Try It) that are answered in Appendix F, thereby helping students to check their understanding. The examples and exercises, combined with the Concept Checks, are designed to help students gain confidence about smaller segments of material before they try to answer larger questions and problems at the end of each chapter.
Key Terms at the end of each chapter summarize the essential terms listed in the margins. Applying Your Knowledge sections include end-of-chapter questions that review chapter material and encourage thought about the meaning and application of chemical concepts. Quantitative questions are included where appropriate.
Personal Side boxes highlight the achievements of important contributors to the science of chemistry. World of Chemistry boxes describe new developments related to chapter topics, or focus on science-related societal issues that often raise difficult questions that do not always have clearcut answers. In the previous edition, these boxes were called Science and Society and Frontiers in the World of Chemistry.
